Robert Frederick Crowe, 15 Squadron, Main Force, Bomber Command, St Desir
VALENTINE CARD FROM A LANCASTER CREW MEMBER
When we originally put this valentine, sent in by David Layne, on the website, we did not know who R Crowe was. He was statistically unlikely to be a Pathfinder, but we decided to stretch a point.
In February 2009, David Layne managed to identify him as Robert Crowe, a gunner on 15 Squadron, who was killed in July 1944, aged only 20. Though Robert was not a Pathfinder and therefore technically was beyond our remit, the decision was taken to keep the Valentine as a tribute to him and all the other Main Force aircrew of Bomber Command.
This summer, David Layne managed to get in contact with the niece of Robert in Canada, and made her a present of the valentine, and in return she sent him this picture of Robert.
